my goodbyes and hellos

It's officially 2011 here in Singapore. Truth be told, I've been dreading the coming of 2011 not because I'm not excited about progress and moving forward and all that but more so because the month of festivity (december) would be over, and January (the month of seriousness) takes it place: you know, december babies are always more fun than the geeks born in January, right?

Usually, I do a sum up of the year before its over, but alas, I was too busy merry-making and then falling ill as a result that this post is a day late.

Two themes dominated the rather uneventful 2010.

Travel

I made four trips out of the country: to New Zealand with my family, to KL with G over the National Day Weekend, with A to bintan for the 2 days and then to Morocco with G again in December. It was all very fun because I took upon it to plan each trip in minute detail and we were able to maximise our time in all the countries. Well, except KL ... but I guess its an experience in itself to travel during a nation-wide holiday! Singaporeans need to get out of their country, and I think it is a very safe assumption (if not true) to claim that Singaporeans are one of the most widely travelled people in the world.

Work

For the first time in my life, I drew a paycheck consistently for every month of the year! During the course of the year, there were also 2 small increments in my monthly pay that went immediately to funding more trips! hurrah!

In terms of life (as is), I'm still with G and we are hoping we'll get a flat (we'll know for sure in January) somewhere in the Sengkang area. In fact, we took another step towards commitment and marriage by opening a joint bank account before the year was over. At the end of 2009, I prayed to the Lord that he would take care of us and keep us from safe from harm. Although my immediate family is enjoying good health, I lost two relatives - my aunt who was barely 60 to stomach cancer, and my grandmother (who was 85) to old age with 2 weeks of each other. A few of our close friends and relatives also received diagnosis that they have cancer and their time here on earth is limited. On the work-front, a close colleague of mine also lost her dad in a very sudden freak misadventure over the National Day weekend. These deaths were and are still good reminders that our time on earth is limited and we must surely seize the day (within reasonable limits).

But with death, there was new life - two of my cousins each gave birth to a sweet baby and two wonderful colleagues of mine are getting married!

In this new year, I hope
  • I'll learn to make full use of my time
  • be a better teacher
  • loose some weight by exercising
  • travel more
  • find time to do charity work
  • buy an IMAC
  • strive to be a more Christ-like person
  • travel more
  • watch more films
  • and perhaps go back to studying if time and money affords me to.

He makes all things beautiful,
in His time.
