what a girl wants!

Traditionally, the best, most perfect time to shop (here in Singapore) is the entire month of January. That is when the big brands and small brands slash prices in an attempt to get rid of everything Christmasy  in order to ready themselves for the next big thing - Chinese New Year.

So it is now the right time to draw up a list of things I'm coveting, post-Christmas, though most unfortunately, many I've been utterly Americanized and globalized and most of the things on this list won't see a huge slash anytime soon. Next to each item, I've identified if each of them is a "NEED" or a "WANT".

1. a new desktop or laptop: I'm eyeing a new imac over a macbook because it is more value for money (in terms of both price and specifications) than its portable counterpart. I was this close to ordering one from the online store when the boyfriend kindly informed me of rumors that claim new models will be out in three to four months. I guess I could wait as my current laptop is still running fine though my G describes it as "disgusting, unusable, dirty and just plain old with no signs of proper space management or upkeep" [A LONG TERM NEED]
2. a new portable hard drive: Preferably something that does not run on power and works simply at any plug and play but big on memory space. I'm looking at something that has a capacity of at least 500G. I currently have one that is about 3 years old and can hold 350G of stuff. My only bugbear is that it is bulky and requires me to plug it into a power supply. With the rate at which I consume movies and my new found interest in photography, I thought it would make more sense to get something small (but big on memory) and portable so I can take my movies and pictures to class with me. [ an immediate need ]
3. a new wallet: my current wallet has been with me for the last 3.5 years. My mum bought it for me and it was my first genuine leather wallet. I don't know what it was with me and long, leather wallets then, but today, I'm looking at downsizing (though ironically, I've amass a huge collect of discount cards and membership cards than ever before) to a smaller, card-sized wallets, along the lines of an Anna Sui wallet held together by a mini clasp. To find out if clasp wallets are really the thing for me, I'm temporarily using a brand-less (well it does say "Phillips Beauty" on the inside) clasp purse. I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of cards, notes and coins a clasp wallet can hold and so far, I'm holding on to the dream quite tightly and keeping my eyes peeled for something affordable and tasty. [ a want]
4. long, long cheap socks: I love the pair of mid hiking boots I bought from Timberland. They have served me so well with one exception - they don't work well (at all) with ankle socks. The huge sponge at the achilles notch gives my knuckles a slight abrasion that can develop into something quite painful. [a need; definitely!]
5. a set or two sets of thermal wear: I'll be traveling to northern region of Canada in slightly more than 30 days, and the temperatures there are in the negative twenties to thirties! I'm fairly confident that I have enough tops, cardigans and woolen tops that I could layer and play around with but I'm not so sure about my legs because so far, I've been doing okay with just jeans and nothing else. [Clearly a need]
6. a free canon servicing voucher: I had fun in Morocco, but I suspect that there are many sand particles trapped in my camera and I would like to take it to canon for a small bubble bath. [Semi-need]
7. I <3 stationery: gimme more! [a clear-cut want]
8. a 3 year- subscription to the New Yorker: this is my new fun read/flip. I've recently subscribed to a 30 day free trial and I'm still torn between subscribing to the hard copy version or the digital version - while I prefer hard copies, the digital subscription  gives me access to its entire archives! [want]
9. The entire Sherlock DVD of the Second Season: I know the second season will not be out till late 2011, but one can always wish in advance. I've the entire Sherlock DVD of season one and I absolutely love it! It is witty and fun, and a serious modern update of my favourite, timeless detective of all time. [want]

Eight plus one is a lucky number, so I guess I should stop here! Hopefully, money will start coming in and I can brace myself for fun!
